3 Elements to Consider When Creating Your Interior Design Marketing Plan

Marketing is part of the foundation of your interior design business. Without effective marketing, it will feel difficult to attract and sustain your client base.

Marketing your services and offerings isn’t something that you do just once. This is a continuous effort that helps you build trust, reputation and as a result, build a clientele.

So if you’re ready to have a solid plan to support your business, you’re in the right place! There are three main points we want you to consider when planning your marketing strategy:

1. Who are you targeting?

Who are you trying to reach? Who are your offers for? It is important to be clear on your target audience and to not generalize for three main reasons:

  • Niching down will help you create aligned content

It’s important to create content for your specific audience. If you are good at designing family-friendly homes, market your brand using this as your area of genius. Are you great at creating designs for luxury master bedrooms? Make yourself known for it and sell your brand with that in mind. You will get more attention from your desired client base and your brand will stand out from the rest.

  • Niching down will help you understand where and how you can reach your dream clients

Your audiences can be found in varying different online places so it’s important for you to know who you are trying to reach out to. Different age brackets tend to be drawn to different platforms. If your client base tends to be large corporate companies, marketing yourself on Instagram might not be the best use of your time, for example. However, if you are targeting families looking to renovate their homes, then social media might just be your place!

  • Niching down helps you to become an expert

Creating a niche directly helps your business grow. You always bring out the best quality work because you are focused on what you excel at instead of trying to serve everybody. If you try to do it all you will struggle to find those ideal clients. Creating content for the masses will hinder your reach and lower your impact, you become too generalized when you try to do it all.

2. What are your goals?

Once you understand who your marketing is for, you need to create goals for which to work towards. It can be useful to place your goals into two categories:

  • Business goals

These goals are those that you wish to achieve as a business within a certain time frame, such as the launch of a new offer, completing a certain amount of remodels, or acquiring a certain number of clients.

  • Marketing goals

You need to decide what marketing goals to set in order to support your business goals. For example, marketing goals for designers could be:

  • Increase community awareness

  • Generate a larger email list

  • Get published in the media (both online and print)

  • Raise referrals

  • Increase repeat clients

  • Improve website SEO

  • Increase qualified leads

3. What actions do you need to take?

This is what will form the base of your marketing plan and stems from your marketing goals. Once your goals have been defined you can create an action plan. For example, if you desire more repeat clients, having a monthly newsletter, sending birthday emails/discounts, or setting up a referral scheme will come in handy. You will want to determine what steps to take and in what order so each step can build onto the next.

Time to create your marketing plan

Whether you want to create your plan on a Google Sheet or Excel, or add it to your favorite planning tool such as Asana or Click Up, the choice is yours. Use a tool you feel comfortable with and that is easy for you to work with.

For better results, we recommend you to divide your marketing plan into multiple sections. A yearly view, a quarterly view, a monthly view. This is what will help you determine what your daily tasks need to be while always keeping the big picture in mind.

Here are some steps to follow to ensure your plan flows smoothly and you achieve your desired results successfully:

  • Determine your biggest goal based on who you are trying to target with your marketing

  • Break down this goal into steps, or sub-goals (include specifics and deadlines)

  • Put all of your specifics, dates and deadlines in your calendar to ensure you stay on top of everything

  • Consistently evaluate what works and what doesn’t. Keep in mind that not all marketing will directly result in sales, it takes time to build momentum.

  • Ask for help and delegate when you need it.
