Marketing Strategy and Plan for Interior Design Business Success

Success doesn’t just happen overnight or come out of nowhere. The behind-the-scene work such as your marketing strategy and plan creates the right conditions for success to happen!

Having a strong marketing strategy for your interior design business will help to establish your company as a trustworthy leading business, get consistent new leads, and have a nice flow of customers.

So, let’s get starting on your strategy now!

1. Be clear on who you are

Before anything, the success of your marketing strategy will depend on how CLEAR you are on your own business.

To share effective communication, it is extremely important that the communicator - you - is clear on what message they want to share.

For that, here are a few things you will want to determine and get clarification on:

  • Why did you start your business - what is your goal and your mission

  • What is your ideal target audience - can you clearly define the type of customers you want to attract, their needs, their desires?

  • What is your offer - if someone asks you right now what they can purchase from you, can you answer clearly?

  • What is your area of expertise - the things you are not only really good at but also passionate about

Be clear on the type of business you want to have and own it. The more you will feel aligned with your business and your offer, the easier it will be to communicate clearly about it.

2. Content creation is king

We highly recommend you incorporate content creation marketing in your strategy!

Content marketing focuses on creating content that is relevant to your business and to your audience, that provides quality information and that has for goal to really be beneficial and provide support to your community.

You can create content in different ways through social media posts, blog posts, podcast episodes, YouTube videos, etc.

Before starting on your content marketing strategy and planning, it is really important to define the message you want to share.

Using the answers from the previous point, define the type of information you will be providing to your community.

Depending on your ideal audience and favorite projects, your content will look very different. Professionals working on coworking spaces versus professionals working on tiny homes will have a very different focus and will share content with different objectives in mind.

What is your community looking for and how can you create content that will answer their questions and needs? Open an Excell sheet and start writing all the different ideas you have.

3. Social Media

Having a presence on social media is going to be really important to help you create a community, share more about your company, and to help you be seen by new potential customers.

This is where you will share the high-quality content you are creating. As well as more personal posts, behind-the-scenes, inspiration, services, and offers.

Don’t forget social media are made to be social. This means that it is an interactive platform where you are encouraged to engage with other people - past, current, and potential customers, but also industry leaders, potential collaborators, etc.

Because being active on social media can take some time and energy, it is important to make sure you are focusing your efforts on the right platforms for you. If you want to learn more, click here for the top 3 social media platforms for interior designers.

4. Email marketing

Sending a weekly or monthly newsletter to your audience is a great way to keep them in the loop of what is happening at your company and to stay top of mind. Email marketing is a very powerful tool when used right! What you really don’t want to end up doing is bothering your audience and finishing in their spam or being deleted right away.

To avoid making your newsletter a burden to your audience’s mailbox, make sure to strategically think of the content you want to share ahead of time.

Every newsletter should have a clear goal. It could include some of the followings:

  • useful information if anything is happening at your company

  • a clear call-to-action to promote a relevant service

  • interesting and inspiring content by resharing a popular blog for example.

Keep your reader in mind and make sure the email is bringing something positive to them.

5. Public Relations

If you want your business to skyrocket to success, we highly recommend having a public relations strategy in place! Being referenced in different media will increase your reach and help you attract more customers.

Start by making a list of media outlets such as interior design magazines that are aligned with your audience.

Then get to know the media and journalists - what do they like to talk about, what are they looking for, what are the deadlines of the magazines.

The more information you can gather on the magazine, the better you can be prepared to send a relevant pitch.

Not every project or every topic will fit every magazine, and that’s perfectly ok! Know who to pitch, when to pitch, and what to pitch to increase your chances of getting published.

6. Schedule your content

Last, but not least, planning and scheduling all your content ahead of time is key!

Now that you have a list of content you want to talk about, and you know where you will be sharing it, pull out your calendar and write it all down. Take into consideration all important dates for your business, but also the different seasons and holidays. You can also look into the national days that are important for your industry.

You can have a calendar for the year or the next 6 months with all the topic ideas and then actually producing and scheduling the content 30 days in advance.

Planning your content ahead of time will help you to stay on top of the creation, avoid the occasional lack of inspiration, reduce last-minute work, and avoid missing out on important events you would have wanted to talk about.
