How do high-end interior designers get clients?

As a high-end interior designer, all you want is probably to focus on... designing. But as the owner of your company, a big part of your work also consists of building your business and marketing yourself to attract new clients.

These strategies will help you get new clients so you can get back to what you do best!

1. Make your portfolio stand-out

As an interior designer, having a portfolio is crucial. Your future customers want to see what you are offering and it must represent your design style and the type of projects you are specialized in.

This is a visual tool to help your potential clients picture themselves working with you.

When building your portfolio keep your ideal clients in mind. This isn’t about showing every single project you’ve done in the past but instead focusing on the projects you want to attract in the future.

For example, if you’ve done the remodeling of a coworking space years ago but you don’t want to work on these kinds of projects again, then you can leave it out.

We recommend you to first get clear on who your niche is. That will make the rest of the process much easier!

2. Get published with a strong PR strategy

Getting your name out in an interior design magazine or other magazines that are being read by your niche is going to help you get new clients!

There are multiple ways to get your name in a magazine. You can pitch one of your projects and really highlight your designs or be featured as an expert on a specific topic. You may be asked to share your opinion on a new trend for example.

Getting published in your favorite magazines is not as inaccessible as it may look but it does require good preparation.

3. Build a content marketing strategy

Content is king! By publishing consistent and useful content that is created especially for your audience you will build a community and attract new clients.

The content you publish can be in different forms: having a blog is a great way to start, but you can also start a podcast, have a YouTube channel, or focus on your social media.

Content creation will help you position yourself as an expert, increase traffic on your website, and build relationships with your audience.

The key is to really understand your target market’s needs, problems, and desires, and then create content that addresses those. By offering consistent content that solves people’s needs or talks to their desires, you will soon become their go-to source of information for that topic and start building a trustworthy relationship with them.

4. Use your network

Online marketing is great and can help you reach a broader audience. But don’t neglect in-person strategies! At the end of the day, nothing beats word-of-mouth recommendations.

Make sure to nurture your network and meet people in your industry. Architects, builders, and realtors for example are great contacts to have. Their clients can be your clients, too so make sure they know about you and your offerings so they can refer their clients to you when they are looking for an interior designer.
